The legendary Actor, famous for his performances in Lawrence of Arabia and Dr Zhivago, says Americans are stupid, and we think he's on to something (go figure).

Omar says Americans are "ignorant" of the goings on in the rest of the world and presumably that's why we get ourselves into so much trouble.   We think there is truth to the criticism that US Foreign Policy can be myopic, and at times we are flummoxed when we discover that in certain places in the world, people don't like us very much.

There is also truth to the criticism that many people in the US can't even spot domestic landmarks on a map, let alone international ones as Omar points out.  Truly, he is right and this is an embarrassment.

However,

Good ole Omar goes on to say that he had the privilege of lecturing President Bush on Bush's advocacy of democratization of the middle east.  Omar says. according to the WorldNetDaily (www.worldnetdaily.com), that "We the Arabs...We are not like [regular countries] we are sects.  This is how we have always been.  People like me prefer to go to the neighborhood sheik, and you say 'This man stole from me'.  The sheik says to him, 'Return the money or never come back to the neighborhood'.

Well gee Omar here we have to take a little umbrage over middle eastern peoples yearning to breathe free.  You see, Omar's observations don't mesh with the fact that millions of Iraqi citizens risked their lives to go to the polling places, and vote in their first democratic election EVER.   Yeah we know that the local sheik had a role to play, and this is why the majority of Sunnis boycotted the election, but you still cannot ignore that people by the millions turned out under threat of death to simply cast a vote. 

Sure the neighborhood Don ...er - I mean sheik - has a role to play in traditional Arab life we suppose, but after seeing people knowingly risk death just to cast a vote, we here at The Stupid Nation believe that Omar has it wrong.  

The Stupid Nation blog was born out of our concern that Americans are becoming more and more like automaton drones with each passing day - our political leadership seems to be counting on this.   So we do not necessarily disagree with Omar that a very significant and troubling block of Americans are just bald-assed dumb.

However, so long as Arabs cannot evolve to give their own people a greater voice in the determination of who and how they are governed, well, then so long will they be a little people, a silly people, greedy, barbarous and cruel.
